Case Study 2: Measuring Investment Distortions when Risk-Averse Managers Decide Whether to Undertake Risky Projects

Case Expectations  Emphasis should be placed on the main problem being solved, key issues, and/or root causes.  Students will be tasked with applying the appropriate analytical tools to case data, both quantitative and qualitative.  For some cases, root cause analysis will be used to examine symptoms/key issues to derive alternative solutions mindful of the cause(s).  Alternatives will then be critically examined leading to a final solution set.  For other cases, the appropriate analytical tools will be used to choose among a set of currently existing alternatives.  Finally, some cases will require a combination of both analytical approaches.  Case study 2 requirements:   1.     Introduction ·      Identify the key problems and issues in the case study. ·      Formulate and include a thesis statement, summarizing the outcome of your analysis in 1-2 sentences. 2.     Background ·      Set the scene: background information, relevant facts, and the most important issues. ·      Demonstrate that you have researched the problems in this case. 3.     Evaluation of the Case ·      Outline the various pieces of the case study that you are focusing on. ·      Evaluate these pieces by discussing what is working and what is not. ·      State why these parts of the case study are or are not working well. 4.     Proposed Solutions/Changes ·      Provide specific and realistic solution (s) or changes needed. ·      Explain why this solution was chosen. ·      Support this solution with solid evidence (outside research, personal experience) 5.     Recommendations ·      Determine and discuss specific strategies for accomplishing the proposed solution. ·      If applicable, recommend further action to resolve some of the issues. ·      What should be done and who should do it?
