Discussion 1: Future Trends in Terrorism Competencies Addressed in This Discussion o Competency 3: Articulate how terrorism impacts policy and operations of law enforcement in America. Introduction Terrorism is changing. The motives may remain relatively stable, but tactics and objectives evolve. As terrorists attempt attacks and are thwarted or are successful, they learn new ways to perpetrate their attacks. These attacks can be physical (bombing, shooting, kidnapping, et cetera) or technology-related (cyber-attacks, online scams, viruses, encryption, et cetera). Identifying the types and understanding adequate responses is important for people in all levels of law enforcement. In this discussion, you will identify some of these changes and how law enforcement needs to respond to it. As the captain of your local police municipality, suppose your chief wants to know where terrorism is heading in the future. Specifically, what types of attacks are likely, and what are some solutions to identify, prevent, and respond to those attacks? He has asked you for a brief summary of the following, based on research. However, Chief Edwards recognizes that they are not the only terrorist threat in the country and to his city. History has demonstrated that, aside from 9/11, domestic, non-Islamic terrorists have killed many, many, more people than Jihadists. The chief wants a briefing on the following topics related to these non-Islamic terrorist groups. As the captain of your local police municipality, investigate non-Islamic based terrorist groups, focusing on recommendations in the literature for addressing these groups and the threat they pose. For your initial discussion post: o o Illustrate two domestic, non-Islamic terrorism groups that pose a continued and future threat to the U.S. Identify an emerging or new law enforcement tactic for mitigating the threat each group poses. o Predict the impact the identified mitigation tactic will have on law enforcement, terrorist groups, and society.
