Discussion 1: Future Trends in Terrorism

Competencies Addressed in This Discussion

Introduction

Terrorism is changing. The motives may remain relatively stable, but tactics and objectives evolve. As terrorists attempt attacks and are thwarted or are successful, they learn new ways to perpetrate their attacks. These attacks can be physical (bombing, shooting, kidnapping, et cetera) or technology-related (cyber-attacks, online scams, viruses, encryption, et cetera). Identifying the types and understanding adequate responses is important for people in all levels of law enforcement. In this discussion, you will identify some of these changes and how law enforcement needs to respond to it.

As the captain of your local police municipality, suppose your chief wants to know where terrorism is heading in the future. Specifically, what types of attacks are likely, and what are some solutions to identify, prevent, and respond to those attacks? He has asked you for a brief summary of the following, based on research.

For your initial discussion post:

Discussion Objectives

Response Guidelines

Respond to at least two of your peers’ posts. Explain whether their posts included information similar to, or different from, your own. How did your selected future trends differ from the trends selected by other learners? What additional insight can you share, connecting these trends with appropriate law enforcement responses? Deliberate with your classmates as to whether these trends will make law enforcement’s response more difficult or if it will be able to mitigate them. Where needed, use examples from current events or the literature to enhance your response to other learners. Be sure to cite your resources.

Discussion 2: Law Enforcement Response to Future Domestic Terrorism

Competencies Addressed in This Discussion

Introduction

Currently, the world’s attention is concentrated upon international Islamic-based terrorism. However, Chief Edwards recognizes that they are not the only terrorist threat in the country and to his city. History has demonstrated that, aside from 9/11, domestic, non-Islamic terrorists have killed many, many, more people than Jihadists. The chief wants a briefing on the following topics related to these non-Islamic terrorist groups.

As the captain of your local police municipality, investigate non-Islamic based terrorist groups, focusing on recommendations in the literature for addressing these groups and the threat they pose.

For your initial discussion post:

Illustrate 2 domestic, non-Islamic terrorism groups that pose a continued and future threat the the United States

Identify an emergening or new law enforcement tactic for mimitaging the threat that each group poses.

Predict the impact the identified mitigation tactic will have on law enforcement, terrorist groups, and society.

For your initial discussion post:

Discussion Objectives

Response Guidelines

Respond to at least two of your peers’ posts. When responding to your peers, point out additional non-Islamic terrorist groups your peers identified that you did not. What additional insights did this variety give you? Did you perceive the potential threats differently? Why or why not? Was there a consensus on which law enforcement methods were best to confront these groups? Where needed, use examples from current events or the literature to enhance your response to other learners.
