React to the art – Okay, now you need to do the hard part – you need to figure out what you think about this artwork you have chosen to write about. Did you like it? Why? What about the thing drew you to it? Does it remind you of happy times in your past? Do you like the way the light bounces off the smoothness of the marble? Introduction:  (1/2- 1 page) Open your paper by writing about your experience with visiting museums in the past. Did you go with school?  With family or friends?  How old were you? How did you feel about museums in the past? Draw the reader into your essay with a bit of narrative.  (If you have never visited a museum you can talk about some other experience you have had with art instead.) II. Locating your piece (1/2 page)  First, list the Title of artwork, Artist , Medium, and year created.  Include the image of the artwork in your paper so I can see it as well. Then describe: What was it about the work that made you come back to it and choose THIS one. Was your interest primarily visual, emotional, or something else?  What drew you in? III. Form ( 1-1.5 pages)  Describe the Form of the piece.  You need to incorporate the AT LEAST 5 technical terms you learned from the text or class to describe the piece in DETAIL.  Underline them. First provide a detailed description of the overall work. Then, analyze the components of the piece’s composition in technical terms.   Remember to organize your impressions…don’t just give me random details.  You will be graded on how well you apply the vocabulary from the course to your analysis.  Open your textbook if you need to review things like line, value, positive space, movement etc. IV. Content (1-1.5 pages) Context: Do some research to figure out what art-time period this work is a part of.  Explain if the piece fit into its time period.    If you use a source such as a book, website, or materials from the exhibit you should CITE  your source.   Objective Interpretation: Then, explain what the artists message or idea was in the piece. Use the artist or an expert as a source for an objective view of the work. You must cite your source!  Use parenthetical citation in your paragraph.  Cite the source (the entire web-address in parentheses) within the paragraph where you used it, as opposed to at the end of the essay. Subjective Interpretation.  Say what you see in the work of art.  Trust your own voice to explain the spirit of the art.  **Consider that form and content are connected so try to explain why the artist chose a specific form to also express their message. V. Conclusion (1/2 – 1 page) What is obvious about the piece and what did you need to do research to “figure out” about the art?  Was the message easy to understand or did you have to work for it? How did the “tools” you learned in the course apply to your  “participation” with this work of art? ___________ Citations: Use parenthetical in text citations within your paragraphs.  That means you cites sources IN the paragraph where you used the source.  If you used the words of a source, you also need quotations around the words you borrowed.
