*Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Providing the Best Care for Veterans
Veterans in the United States face daily challenges that can be detrimental to their quality of life. Veterans of all generations, especially those that were a part of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, have post-traumatic stress disorder. The combat tours served in OIF and OEF have led to increased PTSD diagnosis in the last five years. The research question is, “What are the best interventions that can be used to improve the treatment of PTSD for veterans?”. Upon enlistment, service members are expected to be physically and mentally ready for service.
There is an expectation of resiliency, self-reliance, and the ability to control emotions. The military often hears the words “suck it up and drive on,” adding to the idea that emotions should be individually dealt with. However, there is nothing done for servicemembers due to the culture, the training, and the experiences that may negatively affect them. Treatment is not sought-after during service due to the culture and fear of losing their jobs. After service, the thought process of sucking it up and driving on continues.
A significant number of veterans do not complete the treatment that is being provided to them. The lack of completion is due to a variety of variables that prevent them. Barriers include the belief that the treatment will not be sufficient, lack of transportation, and medical limitations. Veterans are also concerned with the potential negative repercussions that may come with being diagnosed with PTSD, including losing their jobs or being labeled as crazy. The mixed-methods approach is necessary to properly study the barriers veterans face concerning their diagnosis of PTSD.
The use of self-structured and structured interviews will produce sufficient data for the study, including self-administered questionnaires. The qualitative data collection will lead to quantitative data analysis allowing for the creation of categories. PTSD is the most common mental health disorder in the veteran population. The military expects that members are resilient and have emotional control. However, veterans are faced with barriers that may keep them from seeking or getting treatment due to the belief that their treatment is not sufficient or trouble maintaining reliable transportation.
The mixed-methods approach is the best way to conduct the study to understand veterans diagnosed with PTSD and provide possible ways to improve the issues. Section 8 of the code of conduct will be followed to ensure that all ethical considerations are considered and followed. Informed consent will be filed, benefits and consequences will be known, all personally identifiable information will be safeguarded, and participants will have contact information for researchers so that all questions can be answered.
