Reflection Draft

Refection Draft Page Requirements: 3-4 pages typed, double-spaced text (Font – Times New Roman, Size 12 ) The title page and reference or works cited page* are not included in the page count. If you do not meet the page requirements for this assignment, your grade will be affected. *No research is required for this assignment that is based on your observation and conclusions about what you observe. Support for your conclusions will be drawn from concrete details and specific examples plus your explanation of their relevance. There is no “correct” conclusion; focus on how you feel and what you think is most important. Purpose: To observe how some aspect of our lives has changed in the time of social distancing. To describe how our interactions have changed and draw conclusions about the consequences of those changes. To analyze the relevance of what you observe. To persuade the reader that your way of “seeing” is interesting, refreshing or unique. Procedure: Select an activity, family ritual, event that has some meaning for you. List all the characteristics of the subject and select the most interesting ones, those that you can describe specifically and analyze. Be descriptive (careful selection of language to convey atmosphere, tone, your point of view). Filter facts through your consciousness (don’t try to tell everything; be selective to maintain focus). Work from your thesis to be sure that all the points are relevant to that. Even if a point is true, it does not mean it belongs in the essay. For example, if my thesis is that “Covid19 has greatly impacted our lives, especially our children’s because they can no longer participate in school activities,” then I will isolate the details/examples that illustrate that. I will not, however, describe diverse aspects (like impact on family meals or visiting grandparents), unless by contrast it helps support my thesis. Explain the relevance of the details; do not just report facts. Do not just say what the people are doing, but explain why/how what they are doing relates to the thesis, the main point of the analysis. Avoid first-person “I” unless you are giving a personal example. Remember, however, that your personal example must reflect a point that can be more widely applied to the reading audience. In other words, it is not just that “I” do X, but “I” do X like most mothers/professors/women. The readers must feel they can relate to your points. Assessment: Contains a dominant impression that establishes the central point of the essay Each paragraph contains examples that support the dominant impression Descriptive, concrete language is used throughout Clear topic sentences have been created for each body paragraph, so the reader knows the main point of each paragraph Analysis of the points raised has been established Writing is grammatically correct and free of typos Language is concise and clear; word choice is appropriate Varied syntax is used throughout Page requirements were met
