Option #1: This final research paper option will require you to detail an event or person that made a significant historic, or political impact on modern China. Not only will you provide the important details of the person’s life or the significant event, but you will need to provide information on the context surrounding the person or event. In evaluating the significance of the person’s life or specific event, think through the impact this person or event had on modern Chinese culture. You can even consider the counter-factual thought experiment (minimal history re-write rule applied) as a way to explore the process of history. For example, if this event did not happen we likely would not have seen this result or response. Alternatively, if this person did not create these works or enact these policies we likely would not have seen this cultural change or shift in thinking. There are numerous Chinese historians in the Boston area to seek guidance and use as sources for your topic.
Option #2: This final research paper option will require you to explore a focused domestic problem faced by modern Chinese society. Not only will you provide details on the problems current-day effects, but I want you to dig deeper into the problem to discover the root causes and issues. Also, you will need to explore what the Chinese government is doing to confront or rectify this current issue. Be sure to make use of faculty at Babson and other surrounding colleges to help you explore your particular issue.
