Abstract:

Abstract Objective Ambiguity may be an unavoidable part of everyday interactions. The reactions of socially hypersensitive people (i.e., self-esteem contingent on maintaining positive relationships) to ambiguous feedback may go beyond discomfort to injury to self-esteem. In the present research, we examined whether and how there might be a relationship between social hypersensitivity and self-esteem that depends on social feedback. Method In two experiments, participants read scripts containing different types of social feedback (Studies 1 and 2). In two correlational studies, we examined the relationships among social hypersensitivity, perceived valence of ambiguous events and self-esteem and among social hypersensitivity, intolerance of uncertainty and self-esteem (Studies 3a and 3b). Results Social hypersensitivity was negatively correlated with state self-esteem when participants imagined a conversation with a controversial statement followed by a pause, by explicit ambiguous feedback, or by explicit negative feedback (Studies 1 and 2). The perceived valence of ambiguous events and the amount of tolerance for uncertainty partially mediated the relationship between social hypersensitivity and trait self-esteem (Studies 3a and 3b). Conclusions Individuals who are socially hypersensitive interpret ambiguous feedback more negatively and have a lower tolerance for uncertainty than people who are less socially hypersensitive, and this in turn predicts lower self-esteem. Highlights • Higher social hypersensitivity correlates with lower self-esteem after ambiguous feedback. • Higher social hypersensitivity correlates with lower self-esteem after negative feedback. • Interpretation of ambiguity partially mediates social hypersensitivity/self-esteem relationship. • Intolerance of uncertainty partially mediates social hypersensitivity/self-esteem relationship. The[AG1] topic selected for this research project is self-esteem. Self-esteem refers to the confidence that individuals have in their existence as humans beings[AG2] . The nature of self-esteem in most individuals is linked to social relationships, a sense of good achievement or satisfaction (Zeigler-Hill and Brown, 2017). Low self-esteem negatively affects a person’s performance in all aspects of their life since they fall short of their potential, become depressed and condone abusive situations. Highly intensified self-esteem, on the contrary, can also cause adverse effects such as narcissism, arrogance, and manipulative behavior. Therefore, self-worth is beneficial when it is moderately balanced to help one cope with life challenges and changes.

why this topic is of interest

This topic is significant since it has spawned so many theories that may conflict with the concept of self-esteem and its implications. Besides, self-confidence is a broad research topic which helps to understand social psychology since it is a personality trait. Social psychology research has attempted to explain the notion of self-esteem based on different theories and approaches, but it is critically affected by emotional stability (Myers[AG3] , 2013). It makes the topic to be more compelling since self-actualization affects the mental, psychological, and social state of human beings. Further, it influences the development of an individual from child to adolescent then into adulthood based on the decisions they make, which is quite absorbing.

Potential research areas in the topic[AG4] .

There are multiple research areas for the topic on self-esteem which have spurred many authors and researchers to study about it. One of the research areas is the correlation between self-esteem and social relationships. Several theoretical perspectives suggest that self-esteem has an impact on social relations of all kinds (Zeigler-Hill and Brown, 2017). Another research area that emerges from this is whether self-esteem is a cause or consequence of unstable social relations. The long-term effect of the family environment during early childhood on self-esteem is also a key area of research. This proposal analyzes how family background and context can affect the self-esteem of an adolescent or adult in life.
